December 2007

Christmas Greetings to one and all !

It has gotten cold on the Cumberland Plateau but no snow has fallen yet. Bunk and Bobby have been busy putting the finishing touches on the new fence on the right side of the road entering Senior Camp. The cows and horses have enjoyed the additional green grass. The Louise Boteler Floating Dock has just been returned and has a new floor installed. It is ready to be launched into the lake as soon as warm weather returns. We will post pictures on the Web Site soon. We have been experiencing some difficulties with the Web Site and hope to have the problems resolved soon. Pepe has been busy cutting wood and mulching leaves. The recent drought claimed several trees but they will make wonderful firewood. Larry Kilby is working hard in Junior Camp on the addition to the Crow’s Nest. It will be twice the original size by the summer of 2008. Also an asphalt paving crew arrived today to begin some additional paving around Junior Camp. The road from the Dining Hall down to the North Pole and from the Dining Hall over to the Infirmary will be paved. Click here to view these improvements!

We were deeply saddened by the death of Dolly MacKay on November 19, 2007. She was a beloved fixture in Junior Camp for 15 summers and we will miss her as our “Nakanawa Grandmother”. She had many projects while she and her daughter, Nurse Betty Lynn, were in the Infirmary such as making the bonnets for “Oliver with a Twist”, repairing the sleeping bags and parachute, and making the curtains for both CB’s. We will miss Dolly’s warm smile, cheery laughter, and bright eyes.

Camper applications have been arriving daily and we still have places available for all sessions. If you have not enrolled, we encourage you to sign up soon for the 2008 season. Check out the enrollment to date included in this letter. Applications and enrollment to date are also posted on the Web Site:
www.campnakanawa.com

If you have any interested friends, encourage them to join you this summer! Staff applications are beginning to arrive also. We expect many of the girls from Tent Row 2006 to join us this summer and many of the counselors from 2007 are planning to return as well.

If you need to contact us by e-mail our address is : campnak@frontiernet.net

We wish you and your family all the joy and peace the holiday season has to offer. Believe in miracles for sometimes they really do happen.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at Camp Nakanawa !

Love,

Ann, Pepe, Annette, & Messena

Mabel “Dolly” MacKay
December 25, 1916 ~ November 19, 2007

For those of us who had the pleasure to know and love Dolly, you had the opportunity to look into her sparkling blue eyes, to see her bright smile, to hear her laugh, and absorb the joy she felt as a witness to the majesty of God’s creation. She lived 90 years to the fullest, experiencing all that life brought her way.

The expression “I am too busy” had no place in Dolly’s life. She made time for everything and everyone. Her values and moral certainty were passed on with pride to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the campers and counselors attending Camp Nakanawa during the ten summers she was here with her daughter, Junior Camp Nurse Betty Lynn Souther and granddaughters, Betsy and Sadye Souther. Her legacy of love will long endure.

Ann & Pepe attended the Memorial Service held in Bradenton, Florida on December 1, 2007. One of the most beautiful moments of the service included two Camp Nakanawa songs, the Alma Mater and MMM,I Want to Linger, being sung by Nancy Brucker and Mary Galvin. Pepe gave one of four eulogies to Dolly! What a very special lady she was. From “Camp Grandmother” to “Grammy Joy”, she was loved by one and all. Camp Nakanawa has lost a true and loyal friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Bradenton, 1402 Manatee Avenue W, Bradenton, FL 34205 or Thornwell Home for Children, P.O. Box 60, Clinton, SC 29325-0060 or the Elisabeth Mitchell Charitable Trust, 1084 Camp Nakanawa Road, Crossville, TN 38571.

Happy Easter!!

April 4th, 2007

Easter Greetings from Camp Nakanawa!

Spring is here and summer cannot be far behind. Camp looks terrific. The grass is mowed, lake is sparkling, the trees have leaves, and we look as if we could open tomorrow. All we need are campers and counselors!

A few changes are in store for the 2007 summer. First of all Jan will not be returning this summer after 21 years as Head Counselor and Assistant Head Counselor in Senior Camp. We will all miss her greatly but know that she will be back to join us again for a future summer! Karen Hale, who has been the Head Counselor in Junior Camp for the past several years, is moving across the lake to Intermediate and Senior Camp to be Head Counselor for the Two and Four Week Sessions and Shelly Landau will take over in Junior Camp as Head Counselor for the Two and Four Week Sessions! We know it will be a smooth transition since both Karen and Shelly have years of valuable Nakanawa experience.

Many improvements have taken place since last summer and to name a few: Deck repair to Junior Arts & Crafts, new roof on Library, Tennis Courts re-surfaced in Junior Camp, new Soccer Goals for Junior Camp, additional aluminum canoes for Senior Camp canoe trip, Bookcase in Senior C.B. for Lou’s Devotional Books, park areas with benches and picnic tables between Tent Row Cabins, combination Freezer/Cooler for Senior Kitchen, new steps for Leon’s Cabin in Senior Camp, more Daylilies planted, new lighting in Senior Arts & Crafts, Trail Maintenance and a new pony for Junior Camp: “Joe”!

Two Week Junior and Four Week Intermediate and Senior Camps have very few spaces left!

The Playhouse Production for the Four Week Session will be “Guys and Dolls”. What a fun outing for all the Four Week campers and counselors.

We still need dining hall aides in Two Week Junior and Two Week Intermediate Camps. If interested, please contact us right away by e-mail, phone or letter and we will add your name to the list. Also, any cabin requests need to be sent in by June 1st. We do not guarantee that cabin requests will be honored but we will certainly take them into consideration.

Halloween Greetings!!!

Camp Nakanawa is glowing with the colors of autumn and fallen leaves are covering the ground everywhere. The squirrels are busily storing nuts, the hummingbirds have traveled south for the winter, and the horses are growing fat in the pastures with thick, furry coats of hair.

Many projects and improvements have taken place over the past three months:

· New Deck on Junior Camp Ellis Island
· New wooden chair racks for Senior Camp Kiosk metal chair storage
· A few Cabins painted in Junior and Senior Camps
· New Metal Folding Chairs for Senior Kiosk
· 2006 Cabin Plaques posted in each cabin
· 2007 Cabin Plaques cut and ready for decorating
· New Back Hoe for digging water lines and other construction
· Several dead and dying trees removed from Senior Camp
· Pasture Fences repaired
· Hay cut and stored for horses and cows
· Wood cut and stored for 2007 season
· Cleaned out some of the hiking trails
· Canoes stored safely in the new Emily Henry McMahon Canoe Storage Building
· New metal roofs on some cabins in Junior and Senior camps.
· New tetherball pole in Junior camp

We have received many applications so be sure to check the enrollment to date and the Fall Travel Schedule for the Slide Show. We are beginning to hear from potential counselors also. Enthusiasm for the 2007 camp season is off and running!

Many of you have asked about Pepe’s recent trip to Ghana, Africa. For pictures and details about his trip click on the above link. It was a wonderful experience and 2,000 people in the village of Ateiku have a fresh supply of drinking water provided by the water well that was drilled.

Be sure to send in your completed camper applications by November 30th for the Early Registration Discount. We have extended the deadline one month!
Add Cabin Requests and Aideship Requests on the back of your application or write/e-mail to us with your request. Talk to your friends about Nakanawa and let’s have a full camp for both sessions of 2007! We are especially looking for campers for the two week session.

BOO!!

Spring Greetings from Camp Nakanawa!

What a gorgeous Spring it has been so far. It has been unseasonably warm and flowers are in bloom everywhere. The favorites are the azaleas and Lily of the Valley. There are tons of butterflies all over the azaleas and the Lily of the Valley are so fragrant you can smell them all over camp! Click here for Spring Pictures!

Four Week Intermediate and Senior Camps are almost full so let us hear from you very soon if you are interested in attending. We still have space available in the Four Week Junior Camp and also in both the Two Week Camps, Junior and Intermediate.

The Counselor Staffs are coming along very well. We still need a few young counselors for the various camps. Please contact us for details. Both Karen and Jan will be returning and we have heard from many of the girls from Tent Row 2004. It should be a fun and exciting summer!

The Emily Henry McMahon Canoe Storage Building is almost completed and pictures are posted on the Web Site. We are waiting for the installation of a special curtain on the lakeside of the building to keep the weather out. Once it is installed, the building will be complete!

The storms that came through Crossville and Cumberland County on April 7th caused only a little damage to Nakanawa. We missed all the high winds and tornadoes. We did have some wild lightning that did electrical damage in both camps. It affected the phone systems mainly. We are still waiting for the answering machine to be repaired. If you call camp and we are not here, there is no machine to take your message right now!

Study hard these last few weeks of school. We look forward to seeing everyone in June and July.

Ann & Pepe

Valentine Greetings from Camp Nakanawa!

Winter is still with us but our hearts and minds have turned toward the summer months ahead! We were blasted by the snowstorm this past weekend so we are really trying to “think warm”. We took lots of pictures so you could see for yourself how beautiful camp is covered in white. Check out the photo page for the rest of the snow pictures. Three gorgeous deer, a buck and two does, ran across the soccer field in Senior Camp and into the woods behind the office during the snowfall and it was a sight to behold!

We have all been saddened by the loss of Emily McMahon. Emily died January 25th after a battle against lymphoma cancer that had been diagnosed in the fall of 2005. We have received several stories about Emily from campers and counselors recounting their experiences over the years. Most have been very funny and entertaining and we know that we will miss Emily’s bright smile, contagious laughter, leadership on the waterfront, outstanding fireworks on the Fourth of July, hand-carved A’s and V’s, and brilliant Council Ring Fires. Emily’s family has asked that memorials be made to Family and Children Services, 201 23rd Avenue N., Nashville, TN 37203 or to the Elisabeth Mitchell Charitable Trust, 1084 Camp Nakanawa Road, Crossville, TN 38571. Donations to the Elisabeth Mitchell Charitable Trust will be used to build a shelter for the six War Canoes at Camp Nakanawa. The building will be in Senior Camp on the lakeside of the existing Arts & Crafts building. We hope to have this project completed by June 2006 and will have a bronze plaque as a memorial to Emily.

Do check out the “enrollment to date” section of the newsletter. Make sure that you are listed in the correct camp and session and look for friends’ names that might be missing. Contact those friends right away and get them to enroll so they will not miss out on all the fun. There is still space available in all Two Week and Four Week Camp Sessions.

The Cumberland County Playhouse Production for the Four Week Session will be “Singing in the Rain”. What a fun outing for all the Four Week campers and counselors.

We still need one or two dining hall aides for the Junior Four Week Session and the Junior and Intermediate Two Week Sessions. If interested, please contact us right away and we will add your name to the list. Aideship confirmation letters will be mailed in April. Also, any cabin requests need to be sent in by June 1st. We do not guarantee that cabin requests will be honored but we will certainly take them all into consideration.

We cannot wait until this summer! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love, Ann, Pepe, Annette & Messena

We are having a wonderful time at Camp Nakanawa! We have had a little rain but no storms for those of you who have been concerned about Hurricane Dennis.

There has been more construction off Interstate 40 to let you know about for the drive to pick up your campers. Those who take exit #311, coming from Knoxville/east, need to know the bridge has been closed for repairs. There are two alternate routes you can take. Go to second red light (Shell Station) and turn right onto 70N West going towards Monterey. Go 13 Miles and turn right onto Mayland Loop.

or

Take exit #301, Hwy 70N East, turn left off exit ramp. Go 7 miles from exit and turn left onto Mayland Loop just past Royal Oak Charcoal Plant.

Greetings from Camp Nakanawa!

Spring is here on the Cumberland Plateau. We have posted several pictures on the Web Site so be sure to look them up. Right now we can see the workers from Baseline Construction in Knoxville, Tennessee, putting the finishing touches on the Senior Camp Tennis Court surfaces. The Courts look terrific and will be ready for play June 12th.

Bunk and Bobby have been extremely busy in Junior Camp paving the trail in front of the Council House all the way down to Egypt and to Cabins 11-12 and 13-14. Check out the picture on the web site! Mike is busy painting the Senior Camp War Canoes after spending days of sanding, patching, and pressure washing each canoe. Ann and Pepe spent a whole Sunday afternoon putting red and blue buoys on about 120 feet of rope to mark off the swimming area in Junior Camp. The rope and buoys are in place and ready for the arrival of campers in June. Messena has been in the office getting the camper and counselor lists ready for this summer, updating the Web Site, and recording cabin requests. Annette is raising a baby bunny rescued from Sam Dog! She is hoping to keep it until camp begins so all the Junior Campers can meet "Rabi"! Annette has also been busy planting flowers all over both camps and putting hanging baskets in strategic places. Nakanawa is one beautiful camp!
