Pepe's Trip to |
Ghana Africa |
Many of you have asked about Pepe's trip to Africa. Here is some information about his journey.
I have just returned from a trip to the western region of Ateiku, Ghana, Africa. Over two years ago, Crossvillian Scot Shanks hosted a minister from Ateiku, Lawrence Orduro in our community. He spoke of the many needs, including clean drinking water, of the people of Ghana. With this information, our Crossville Rotary Club began to raise money to provide bored water wells in Ghana.
Through the local Rotary Club and Rotary International, over $103,000.00 was raised to support water well drilling. In late September, six Rotarians including myself, travled to Houston, TX, for three days of well drilling instructions. With money and training in place, four of us traveled to Ghana on October 3rd. Our mission was dual in purpose. First, we were training a team from Ateiku to use the well drilling rig. Secondly, we were drilling a water well for the people of the local village. After disappointment by hitting rock at our first well site, we were successful in boring an 85' water well for a village of 2,000 people called Saponso. All on the drilling team were overwhelmed with a sense of fulfillment by getting clean drinking water to these people!
Poverty is everwhere, but the people were always friendly, respectful and thankful for our part in making the quality of their lives better. We always felt safe and appreciated. Hopefully, the money raised through Rotary will develop 20-25 more water wells, which are desperately needed. These wells will be drilled by the team in Ghana that we trained.
